"The home was almost 30 years old and hadn't been updated at all, which gave us the opportunity to breathe new life into it," says the homeowner. This Bel-Air home, built in 2023, has a roughly $1.5 million three-story, twisting spiral staircase with an open well in the middle, featuring a dangling chandelier. Prior to renovation, there was a natural sitting area off of the kitchen and we decided to transform the space into a morning room. In effort to keep the sense of nostalgia in the space, we left the built-in shelves and wood trim, and lined the shelves with vintage items and found objects. “Organic modern” spiral staircases have become increasingly popular since the pandemic, evoking a sense of wellness using natural materials and neutral color palettes, said Canadian architect Heather Dubbeldam. Many are earthy white plaster and light white oak, she said. Katie McPherson, of the interior-design firm Meyer Davis in New York City, said she goes a step further to emphasize materials’ authenticity, having wooden steps and rails custom-carved to give them a hand-hewn quality. Katie’s appreciation for design started from a young age, when her family undertook a major remodel of the home. She observed her mom and an interior designer work together to develop, coordinate, and implement a shared vision for her family’s home—an imaginative and collaborative process that still resonates with her today. And so began her love affair with beautiful spaces, and quality furniture, fabrics, and materials.
"She was all in for my fabric and pattern craziness," the Davis says of her client. "If grandma had it, she wanted it!" laughs the designer. Careful not to lean too heavily into the grandma aesthetic, she relied on unexpected elements—like a plaster vent hood in the kitchen—to modernize the space against its traditional backdrop. "I love the concept of layering different patterns together and bringing in color to add depth to a space and interest," Davis enthuses.
As such, it perfectly sets the tone for the home as a whole. And the entire house shows that it’s possible to decorate with an eye to the future as well as on the present, all while incorporating elements of the past. The five bedrooms in the home feature a mix of subtle anchors, such as white walls (Benjamin Moore's Simply White) and go-with-anything bedding bases. Colorful textiles spice things up, like the demure blue Pindler headboard in the guest room—where Suzie's mother stays during her long visits from across the pond in England.
Many of the new, helical staircases are sculptural with gentle curves, pushing the boundary of what might even be called a spiral, said Bethany Gale of Stonehill Taylor, an architecture and design firm in New York City. The traditional spiral staircase makes at least one full rotation around a center point in a perfect circle, like a coiled spring. But a helical staircase may have a base larger than its top, a shape similar to a garland spiraling down a Christmas tree.
"We wanted the wallpaper to bring the outdoors in, so a floral pattern was important," explains Davis about selecting the serene blue botanical motif by Cole & Son. Underfoot, a limestone tile from Ann Sacks refers back to the entryway floors while adding a bit of extra drama with a mosaic design. To counter the pattern on pattern and connect to the home's English influence, Davis opted for a classic mirror and distressed-wood vanity from RH. Now, everyone in the McWilliams house has a haven, and what was once a plain white space is a symphony of color, pattern, and texture. “Katie helped warm up the whole home and make it functional for what we needed for our family,” Catherine says. “At the end of the day, I want to make a beautiful, comfortable home for people,” Davis says.
"We wanted to make it look more purposeful." Davis replaced a concealed fridge with a contemporary glass front and installed wooden shelves to refresh the space. The trim color, Parma Gray by Farrow & Ball, was worked into the kitchen and a nearby hallway for a better sense of flow. The result—a cozy, bright home teeming with personality—is a testament to how far smart design decisions can go.
