But once the room’s original cobalt-blue walls made the husband “the talk of all his Zoom meetings,” he called on Katie to redesign the space. The handmade Mexican rug, which the homeowners had helped design with the artisan, determined the palette. Suzie and Brent Williams set out to create their dream house, but they thought outside the new-build box.

The empty-nester clients were relocating from Dallas for work, but they weren’t selling their Dallas home, as they expect to return within 10 years. Nor did they want to move most of their Dallas furnishings to their new home. This gave Katie Davis, of Katie Davis Design, a fair amount of decorating leeway.

The portfolio Catherine references teems with rooms bedecked with peppy hues, bold prints, and charming details aplenty—all signature features of a Katie Davis Design project. Katie Davis developed an appreciation for design at a young age when her family undertook a major remodel of their home. And so began her love affair with beautiful spaces and quality furniture, fabrics, and materials.

When Katie opened the doors to her first standalone design studio, she chose a small white bungalow, which ultimately became her firm’s creative home for five years. Today, the spirit of the bungalow—quintessentially comfortable and casually elegant—remains at the heart of Katie Davis Design. "Everything is meant to be sat on; nothing is just for looks," Davis says about its overarching "lived-in luxury" point of view. The design was put to the ultimate test soon after the Williams family moved in—right before the 2020 shutdown—and passed with flying colors. "It was such a blessing to have both the indoor and outdoor spaces as we faced all the unknowns of a pandemic and remote work and school," Suzie says. "After dreaming of this house for so many years, we found ourselves truly living in it."

The designer spent the bulk of her renovation budget on the bathroom. "It was just hideous. It was really tight and tiny," says Davis of the original layout. "One of our goals was to make sure we had an appropriate size bathroom for such a large house," she adds.

Homeowners Are Embracing Spiral Staircases, but With a Twist

These days, when homeowners embark on a design project, big or small, they are often bombarded with decisions. In a dream world, we’d get to walk into each one of your homes and answer every question—design related or otherwise—that you might have about your home. Since we can’t, we are compiling all of our advice—tricks of the trade, insider scoop, behind-the-scenes looks—here, and pressing publish. The clients “were mindful that their move was temporary, but not that temporary,” Katie says.

They usually require more customization than spiral staircases, which typically cost about $25,000 to $50,000, said White. Prefabricated, do-it-yourself spiral-staircase kits start at around $1,000 at most hardware stores. Because spiral staircases are designed to grab attention, like sculptures, it’s important that their lighting complements them at all times of day and from all perspectives, said Gale. Katie currently resides in Houston, with her husband and two young children. Her own growing family serves as the foundation for her designs, creating beautiful, vibrant living spaces that are comfortable, timeless, and can transition easily to the next phase of a client’s life.

Suzie, who was born in the United Kingdom, sought a relaxed yet refined English disposition for their new 5,000-square-foot Houston home near Memorial Park. "We focused on materials that will look better with age and celebrated the imperfections that come with time," she explains. "This is a place where nobody worries when the kids run inside dripping wet from the pool to grab an ice pop from the freezer." The Williamses have two daughters, Emily (8) and Hannah (5), plus a menagerie of pets.

This duplex penthouse at condo tower 111 West 57th Street in Midtown Manhattan, built in 2023, overlooks Central Park. It has an oval staircase with Macauba stone treads, which connects the first floor to the bedrooms on the second floor. "Women’s kits should be in service to performance, mentally and physically," she said. "If this outfit was truly beneficial to physical performance, men would wear it. This is not an elite athletic kit for track and field."

After 12 years in Charleston, one family was ready to create their forever home in Houston.

Instead, the designer leaned into the home's existing features—rounded arches, a bevy of glass display cases, and existing millwork—to create an aesthetic that honors the home as much as it revitalizes it. "We wanted a fresh update rather than a major gut reno," she says. Throughout the home, fresh paint, ornate patterns, and a vast collection of antiques lend themselves to the sort of traditional aesthetic the client was looking for.
